SPECIAL CALLED TOWN COUNCIL MEETING

MONDAY, MARCH 20, 2006 AT 2:00 P.M.

 

The Town Council of the Town of Cedar Bluff, County of Cherokee, State of Alabama, met in a Special Session in the Council Room at Town Hall, 3420 Spring Street, Cedar Bluff, Alabama, Monday, March 20, 2006 at 2:00 p.m., pursuant to notice duly posted as prescribed by law. Mayor Martha Baker presided and called the meeting to order.  Members in attendance were as follows:

The Invocation was given by Council Member Leatha Harp.

 

Pledge

 

AGENDA ITEM NO 1:                           Consider appointment of a Council Member to District 3 for the Town Council

 

      A motion was made by Council Member Burkhalter, seconded by Council Member Sprouse, that Forrest Pearson be appointed to fill the vacancy in District 3.  Motion carried 4-1.

 

AYE:  Burkhalter, Sprouse, Baker, Harp

NAY:  Sides

     

      A motion was made by Council Member Sides to appoint Christa Neyman to fill the vacancy of District 3, but the motion died for lack of a second.

 

      At this time Assistant Municipal Judge William M. Hawkins administered the oath of office to Forrest Pearson as Council Member for District 3.

 

AGENDA ITEM NO. 2:                          Consider approving minutes of the March 13, 2006 meeting

 

      A motion was made by Council Member Harp, seconded by Council Member Sides, to accept the minutes of the March 13, 2006 meeting.  Motion carried 6-0.

NAY:  None

 

AGENDA ITEM NO. 3:                          Consider authorizing the CIVITAN club to clean, paint and renovate the Community Center.

 

      A motion was made by Council Member Sprouse, seconded by Council Member Burkhalter, to authorize the CIVITAN club to clean, paint and renovate the Community Center.  Motion carried 6-0.

NAY:  None

 

AGENDA ITEM NO. 4:                          Award Bids.

 

a.       1996 Jeep Cherokee

A motion was made by Council Member Sprouse, seconded by Council Member Harp, to table the awarding of bid for the 1996 Jeep Cherokee until the council could research and be sure of the wholesale value of the vehicle.  Motion carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Council Member Burkhalter, seconded by Council Member Sprouse, to accept the bid from Cathy Griffith in the amount of $2,000.00 as the best bid.  Motion carried 6-0.

NAY:  None

 

      At this time Mayor Baker asked if anyone in the audience had any comments.  Mr. John Fath inquired about a public hearing for the appointment of the District 3 vacancy.  Mayor Baker advised him that a public hearing is not necessary for the council to appoint members to the council.

 

      Mrs. Mary Fath, then asked attending council William Hawkins about the posting of the names of the candidates to fill the vacancy and he advised that the Town Council has the authority to appoint person(s) to fill vacancies without posting a list of the names considered.

            There being no further business to be considered, a motion was made by Council Member Burkhalter, seconded by Council Member Sides, that the meeting be adjourned. Motion carried 6-0. (3:16 p.m.).
